Brownsberg A mountain with a view

Brownsberg Suriname
View from Brownsberg

The Amazon Rainforest takes up most of Surinae. It is loosely referred to as the interior or the bush. There are so many spectacular places to visit that with enough money and a good guide you can create your own tour to almost anywhere.

There are a few places that stand out as highlights however. Brownsberg tops most people’s list. Not only because it is on top of a mountain, but because it is pristine, filled with magnificent flor and fauna, and in the trusted hands of a conservation group, the Foundation for Nature Conservation in Suriname (STINASU).

Brownsberg is a relatively short bus ride from Paramaribo. Located in the Brokopondo district it lies130 km south of Paramaribo (80 miles). Unusual for Suriname, the park is at an altitude of 500m (over 1,600 ft). The reserve was created in 1969, and has continually increased in popularity. Today it gets about 18,000 visitors a year including an increasing number of foreign visitors.

Accommodations vary, and you can enjoy Brownsberg as a (long) day trip or stay overnight. The views are spectacular and there are plenty of nature trails. If you want to see the animals that live in that area that is best in the early morning, A tour guide is strongly recommended. There is a restaurant there, and you can hike to waterfalls.
Brownsberg has another attraction – especially for tourists. Stated more accurately, it is appealing due to its lack of something. At 500 meters, you will find mosquitoes conspicuous by their absence!
